Initially released three years ago, Google Map Maker is finally letting users edit the entire map of the United States.
In order to get in on the fun, all you need is a Google account and you can start adding places you know, such as your local bakery or a newly constructed park. Afterward, moderators review your entry before it is published for millions to see.
In addition to adding a place, Map Maker allows users to include more detail, like roads, pools, parks, universities, etc. Another entertaining part of this revolution in cartography is the ability to see live mapping by others across the world.
Starting today, Map Maker will have the entire US map available for editing. According to technology lead, Lalitesh Katragadda, the three-year wait was due in part to wanting map editing available to countries that really needed detailed maps first, as well as wanting to ensure its moderation and editing processes could scale to a higher demand, reports mashable.com.
Also starting today, Map Maker includes Street View to help guide editors, as well as more advanced search options.
