{"id":2141,"date":"2014-05-05T07:52:30","date_gmt":"2014-05-05T11:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?page_id=2141"},"modified":"2014-12-09T20:33:05","modified_gmt":"2014-12-10T00:33:05","slug":"fairchilds-million-orchid-project-restoring-areas-lost-natural-beauty","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/projects\/fairchilds-million-orchid-project-restoring-areas-lost-natural-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"Fairchild&#8217;s Million Orchid Project: Restoring area&#8217;s lost natural beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Posted May 5, 2014<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>By PHOEBE FITZ<\/p>\n<p>Once a natural orchid paradise, South Florida has all but lost the exotic-looking plants that once filled the Miami springtime with beauty and fragrance.<\/p>\n<p>Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing and conserving Florida\u2019s tropical plants, is stepping in to help by launching the Million Orchid Project. Their goal: to reintroduce one million endangered Florida orchids throughout Miami and its surrounding neighborhoods within five years.<\/p>\n<p><!-- This version of the embed code is no longer supported. Learn more: https:\/\/vimeo.com\/s\/tnm --> <object width=\"400\" height=\"225\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=93990971&amp;force_embed=1&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=1&amp;color=00adef&amp;fullscreen=1&amp;autoplay=0&amp;loop=0\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>The Million Orchid Project uses micropropagation techniques, or laboratory plant cloning, to generate new populations of two native orchids: the butterfly orchid and cowhorn orchid. The two species will grow in the lab until they reach three years of age, when they will be planted throughout Miami\u2019s cityscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to reintroduce a million,\u201d said Brooke LeMaire of the garden\u2019s marketing department, \u201cwe have an agreement with the City of Coral Gables to install 250,000 orchids throughout it; around Miracle Mile, the Village of Merrick Park\u2014wherever city officials ask for them to be planted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city is donating $30,000 a year for the next five years to the project.<\/p>\n<p>Fairchild\u2019s micropropagation laboratory opened in December 2012 as part of the garden\u2019s DiMare Science Village. Then, to avoid contamination, they sterilize the seedpods that can contain up to 12,000 seeds each and place them in the base. After a few months, the sprouted seeds are painstakingly moved by hand to larger containers.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, the orchid seedlings are moved to an offsite nursery at the Center for Tropical Plant Conservation. There, they are placed in mulch-filled baskets until they\u2019re mature enough to grow on trees. This quality\u2014non-parasitic growth on other plants\u2014is what makes the butterfly and cowhorn orchids epiphytic, versus their terrestrial counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Their epiphytic nature is one of the reasons their populations are struggling so much, as it makes reproducing naturally difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have to land on a very specific part of a tree that has on it a very specific kind of fungus,\u201d said LeMaire. \u201cWith the condition they\u2019re in now number wise, they can\u2019t do that very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their epiphytic nature is also what makes this urban-centered restoration project possible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2148\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid2-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2148\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2148\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid2--300x225.jpg\" alt=\"An experiment testing whether natural or space-age lighting will affect the orchids growth takes place in the garden\u2019s micropropagation lab (Photo by Phoebe Fitz).\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid2--300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid2-.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An experiment testing whether natural or space-age lighting will affect the orchids growth takes place in the garden\u2019s micropropagation lab (Photo by Phoebe Fitz).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s unique about epiphytic orchids is you don\u2019t need a natural forest to grow them,\u201d explained Dr. Hong Liu, a professor at FIU and lead researcher on the project. \u201cAs long as you have one tree, you can have your orchids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Million Orchid Project is modeled largely off a similar experiment done in Singapore by the Singapore Botanic Gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Their results indicated that orchids grow just as well in cities as they do in natural areas, which is what motivated Dr. Liu along with Fairchild\u2019s director, Dr. Carl Lewis, to bring the project to Miami.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore had overharvested their orchids much like South Florida has, but for different reasons. Instead of cultivating orchids for their aesthetic value, they were utilizing them for medicinal purposes\u2014a tradition in many Asian cultures including China, whose people account for almost 75% of Singapore\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Chinese culture, orchids have been used as medicine for thousands of years,\u201d said Dr. Liu. \u201cChina has around 1,800 species of orchid, and about 20 percent of them are used for various medicinal purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2149\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid3-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2149\" class=\"wp-image-2149 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid3--225x300.jpg\" alt=\"The orchids resemble dust particles at the earliest stage of their lives, and the seedlings must be painstakingly transferred by hand to and from different containers to continue their growth (Photo by Phoebe Fitz).\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid3--225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/orchid3-.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The orchids resemble dust particles at the earliest stage of their lives, and the seedlings must be painstakingly transferred by hand to and from different containers to continue their growth (Photo by Phoebe Fitz).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aside from Singapore Botanical Garden\u2019s project, there have been no other experiments reintroducing plants to cityscapes over rural areas\u2014which is what makes the project so unique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project has been done before with other plants in other cities, in which they planted in natural areas like parks and gardens. What makes our project unique is we want to reintroduce the orchids to a cityscape,\u201d LeMaire said.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is the Million Orchid Project aesthetically improving the community and helping conservation efforts, it is also educating and inspiring schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2013, Fairchild brought 10,000 orchid seedlings to TERRA Environmental Research Institute, a magnet school in Miami-Dade County.<\/p>\n<p>TERRA students did an experiment of their own; testing whether the amount of light the orchids received would affect their growth.
