It is election season at the University of Miami.<\/p>\n<p>Groups such as Hurricanes for Hillary, a non-profit student run organization at the University of Miami, are making it their mission to enhance Clinton\u2019s presence in order to secure her spot in the White House.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6212\" style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6212\" class=\"wp-image-6212\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-4-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Clinton #4\" width=\"374\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hillary Clinton has a strong presence in the Coral Gables and South Miami area. These are some of the people who assist Clinton\u2019s image and help her capture the crucial young voters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Grasping the voters and especially student voters in the South Miami\/Coral Gables location is a must when it comes to political fundraising, campaigning and snatching Florida in the electoral college.<\/p>\n<p>Hillary Clinton\u2019s Florida team knows that.<\/p>\n<p>However, Clinton\u2019s team is not focused on the general election just yet. They are honing in on key states and pinpointing certain age groups necessary to win the Democratic nomination against Bernie Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders has been known to excite students and young voters with promises such as free public college education and legalizing marijuana. Thus, causing Clinton\u2019s employees and volunteers to go the extra mile in order to sway young voters on college campuses, like the University of Miami, to vow their loyalty to Clinton instead of Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican college-aged students demanding a \u201crevolution\u201d is no new phenomenon. Sanders\u2019 message is blunt, simple, and appealing to those who feel as though they have been disenfranchised. The problem is that our political system is not nearly as simple as Sanders makes it seem,\u201d Annie Schwab said. \u201cI think college-aged students, unaware of this harsh reality, don\u2019t want to hear an agenda such as that of Secretary Clinton\u2019s that is relatively more modest in its promises to account for the way in which the system functions.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6209\" style=\"width: 386px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6209\" class=\"wp-image-6209\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Clinton #1\" width=\"376\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clinton makes appearances in South Miami every other month because she knows how important this area is to securing her position in the White House.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Clinton\u2019s overall positive presence on the University of Miami campus and in South Florida does not happen overnight. Students like Schwab and other Hurricane for Hillary members provide an information outlet for the national campaign to reach young people on campus in a personal way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could find Hurricanes for Hillary members like myself tabling in the UC Breezeway just about every week leading up to the Florida primary, and the club will continue to do so next semester in preparation for the general election,\u201d Schwab stated. \u201cWe pass out flyers containing information on select issues about which students tend to be passionate. These snippets of information help build an informed supporter base that can coherently explain why Secretary Clinton should be the next president of the United States and overall boost her support base on the UM campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6210\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6210\" class=\"wp-image-6210\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Clinton #2\" width=\"355\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Schwab interned for Clinton\u2019s campaign this past summer at her headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y. There she learned many skills and techniques to urge students on UM\u2019s campus to vote.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Clinton has a familiar face in the UM community. Recently retired UM President Donna Shalala, served in Bill Clinton\u2019s presidential cabinet as Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1993 to 2001 and is currently president of the Clinton Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton\u2019s brothers, Tony Rodham and Hugh Rodham, resided in Coral Gables during Clinton\u2019s presidency and Bill Clinton were seen golfing with the Rodham brothers at the Biltmore. Clinton also made trips to the South Miami area and the University of Miami during her time as a senator from New York, as Secretary of State and during her run for the White House in the 2008.<\/p>\n<p>On a larger scale, Florida\u2019s finance director for Clinton\u2019s campaign, Gregory Goddard, knew capturing voters and reinstating Clinton\u2019s image at the University of Miami would be a major key in seizing the nomination.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6211\" style=\"width: 335px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6211\" class=\"wp-image-6211 \" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Clinton #3\" width=\"325\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-3-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Clinton-3.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Annie Schwab, a senior and president of the on campus organization, Hurricanes for Hillary, helps inform students about Clinton\u2019s policies and platforms by tabling in the Breezeway and coordinating events.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs Florida\u2019s Finance Director for Clinton\u2019s campaign, my job is to directly handle or oversee all campaign fundraising throughout the state,\u201d Goddard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though UM is a private institution with not as many instate students as University of Florida, for example, UM has major influence in the South Miami region with big voters and even bigger donors. We believe that every vote is important; however, it is important to remember that winning Miami, a diverse and heavily populated city, carries a lot of weight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goddard also acknowledges the importance of student organizations involvement and educating young voters on Clinton\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very important for college students to not only register, but get active in campaigns &#8211; this election will more directly impact their future,\u201d Goddard said. \u201cGetting involved and assisting Clinton\u2019s success is easier than this digital generation thinks. She made it her mission to speak to UM students, professors and faculty at the Bank United Center in February 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAlthough I was born and raised in New York, my family now lives in Florida so they can be closer to me now that I am at UM,\u201d freshman public relations major Catherine Napoli said. \u201cI registered to vote in Florida because I know how important every vote is, especially for Clinton\u2019s campaign. Young adults are easily swayed by idealistic values, that is why Sanders has such a strong following by college students. We need to do a better job educating young voters on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the scope on a national level, Shellie Levin, a Miami native and member of Clinton\u2019s national finance team, stresses the importance of voter turnout and education on college campuses, especially UM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI truly believe that a candidate cannot capture the electoral college without winning Florida. Many candidates only focus on public institutions and forget how important schools like UM are,\u201d Levin said. \u201cNot only do I help run Clinton\u2019s national finances, I have face-to-face conversations with college students on UM\u2019s campus, I educate young voters on Hillary\u2019s policies and I encourage them to have peer-to-peer discussions about politics.
