{"id":11338,"date":"2018-09-28T19:31:05","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T23:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=11338"},"modified":"2018-09-28T19:31:45","modified_gmt":"2018-09-28T23:31:45","slug":"viewers-must-decide-about-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/viewers-must-decide-about-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Viewers decide about hearing news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By DAVE DOWNEY<\/p>\n<p>After the dust has settled from Thursday&#8217;s bouts of interrogation and questioning by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to both Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh, how did certain parts of the news media provide coverage to the American people?<\/p>\n<p>Text box captions at the bottom of the TV screen, also called lower-thirds, not only tell viewers what the news is, they say what the network wants them to make of it. In the event of a big news event, they are a way for viewers to peer into the newsroom and see how those different networks interpret what is being said.<\/p>\n<p>During Ford\u2019s testimony, CNN and MSNBC frequently returned to a statement she made saying she was \u201c100%\u201d certain that Kavanaugh was the one who assaulted her.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News mentioned it only once. Those networks also referred several times to Ford\u2019s sentiment that it was her \u201ccivic duty\u201d to testify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pg-bodyCopy\">During Kavanaugh\u2019s testimony, Fox\u2019s lower thirds changed much more frequently, including several quotes from his emotional opening statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pg-bodyCopy\">CNN and MSNBC frequently referenced a few notable quotes, including \u201cI\u2019ve never sexually assaulted anyone\u201d and \u201cI am innocent of this charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a 30-minute break around lunchtime, CNN and MSNBC rotated lower-thirds with quotes from Ford&#8217;s testimony.
