{"id":11413,"date":"2018-10-04T21:46:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T01:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=11413"},"modified":"2018-10-05T05:55:11","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T09:55:11","slug":"fords-credibility-is-called-into-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/fords-credibility-is-called-into-question\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford&#8217;s credibility called into question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By NICOLE LEMBO<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the first woman to come forward and accuse Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, has been believed by many to be a credible witness during her hearing in front of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, her credibility is being called into question, as a letter from her former boyfriend, Brian Merrick, was released to the public this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter, written under penalty of perjury, contradicts a number of Ford\u2019s claims from the hearing. If such claims are true, Ford may face the possibility of being tried for lying under oath. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former boyfriend claims that he witnessed Ford assist a \u201clife-long best friend,\u201d Monica McLean, prepare for a polygraph test. Merrick stated, \u201cI witnessed Dr. Ford help McLean prepare for a potential polygraph exam. Dr. Ford explained in detail what to expect, how polygraphs worked, and helped McLean become familiar and less nervous about the exam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is contrary to Ford\u2019s sworn statement that she had never assisted in a polygraph test. McLean denied these claims in a recently released statement. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other claims by Merrick include that Ford never admitted to having a fear of flying and that upon the ending of their relationship, due to her infidelity, she stole his credit card information and charged \u201cabout $600 worth of merchandise\u201d to his account. In her sworn testimony, Ford claimed to have a fear of flying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letter has been largely overshadowed in the mainstream media by President Donald Trump\u2019s disbelief of Ford while at a campaign rally in Southaven, Miss. He stated, \u201cHow did you get home? I don\u2019t remember. How\u2019d you get there? I don\u2019t remember. Where\u2019s the place? I don\u2019t remember &#8230;. But I had one beer.
