{"id":3946,"date":"2015-04-10T18:31:56","date_gmt":"2015-04-10T23:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=3946"},"modified":"2015-09-09T10:37:20","modified_gmt":"2015-09-09T15:37:20","slug":"rolling-stone-journalistic-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/rolling-stone-journalistic-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolling Stone: Journalistic failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By CHELSEY SELLARS<\/p>\n<p>As if journalism didn&#8217;t get enough criticism before, the public now has more reason to wag its fingers at the news media.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> released an article titled \u201cA Rape on Campus\u201d that detailed the horrific events a student endured at the University of Virginia. Hot story, surely an interesting read, but too bad it was lacking one thing: facts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cjr.org\/investigation\/columbia_journalism_school_rolling_stone.php\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia University&#8217;s Graduate School of Journalism<\/a> published a report earlier this week stating the article was flawed, causing <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> to retract the article altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Now <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> is not the first to commit this journalistic malpractice, but it still doesn\u2019t excuse the mistake. Fact-checking is part of the ABCs of journalism. Obviously, it was not hard to check the facts, or else there would not have been a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/features\/a-rape-on-campus-what-went-wrong-20150405\" target=\"_blank\">13,000-word report<\/a> on how the entire article was wrong. Minor missteps like this can greatly hinder the quality of work and credibility of the media source.<\/p>\n<p>Incidents like these may not seem so paramount now; they are tiny pebbles thrown at a bullet-proof glass. However, imagine if publications continue to let these amateur mistakes occur? The pebbles will turn into full on boulders, breaking down the house journalistic works and credibility.<\/p>\n<p>The public naturally has skepticism over the media as it is, and faulty articles will only increase it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By CHELSEY SELLARS As if journalism didn&#8217;t get enough criticism before, the public now has more reason to wag its fingers at the news media.
