{"id":4180,"date":"2015-09-17T19:57:58","date_gmt":"2015-09-18T00:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=4180"},"modified":"2015-09-17T19:59:15","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T00:59:15","slug":"social-media-as-a-locus-of-cultural-activism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/social-media-as-a-locus-of-cultural-activism\/","title":{"rendered":"Social media enhance cultural activism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By ISABELLA MESQUITA<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old Muslim, was handcuffed and arrested on Monday for taking his homemade alarm clock to school in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Claiming that \u201cit wasn\u2019t immediately evident that Ahmed\u2019s clock was a class experiment\u201d, police officers and Ahmed\u2019s English teacher accused him of terrorism for creating what they thought was a fake bomb.<\/p>\n<p>Besides revealing the evident Islamophobia that prevails in many people\u2019s judgments of Muslims in America, this incident also reveals how social media are used as a powerful platform geared towards social chance and activism.<a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-17-at-4.58.12-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4182 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-17-at-4.58.12-PM-300x152.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-09-17 at 4.58.12 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-17-at-4.58.12-PM-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-17-at-4.58.12-PM-500x253.png 500w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-09-17-at-4.58.12-PM.png 644w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Within one day after the incident, President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Mark Zuckerberg and thousands of others immediately showed support for Ahmed and expressed their indignation towards the negative stereotypes and racism that greatly occur in our contemporary society.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100,000 tweets and the hash tags <em>#IStandWithAhmed <\/em>and <em>#engineersforahmed<\/em> were trending worldwide by Tuesday morning as well as the school\u2019s Facebook page was filled with criticism.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing this, not only in Ahmed\u2019s case but also in many others related to racism, social media have proven to be one of the greatest platforms to promote justice and equality.
