{"id":5574,"date":"2016-03-16T15:20:09","date_gmt":"2016-03-16T20:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=5574"},"modified":"2016-03-16T16:30:28","modified_gmt":"2016-03-16T21:30:28","slug":"humans-of-new-york-founder-opposes-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/humans-of-new-york-founder-opposes-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"Humans of NY founder criticizes Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By KATIE HOVAN<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Stanton, a photojournalist and blogger, is the brain behind the increasingly popular blog and book \u201cHumans of New York\u201d (HONY), which chronicles stories of ordinary passersby in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Stanton will post daily photos of the people he meets on the street along with a direct quote or short story, giving people a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people.<\/p>\n<p>His work isn\u2019t limited to New York City, though.<\/p>\n<p>Stanton also occasionally photographs and posts stories from people he meets on international excursions, including people in places like the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, however, the HONY founder posted something a little different online.<\/p>\n<p>In an open editorial to Donald Trump, Stanton stated: \u201cI realize now that there is no correct time to oppose violence and prejudice. The time is always now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stanton continued, \u201cBecause along with millions of Americans, I\u2019ve come to realize that opposing you is\u00a0no longer a political decision. It is a moral one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-15-at-12.33.42-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5576\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5576 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-15-at-12.33.42-PM-300x87.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 12.33.42 PM\" width=\"437\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a>Stanton also referenced some of Trump\u2019s most appalling comments regarding race and refugees. Stanton, referring to himself as a journalist whom has \u201cconducted extensive interviews\u201d with people from around the world, added: \u201cI can confirm \u2014 the hateful one is you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-15-at-12.33.59-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5575\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5575 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-15-at-12.33.59-PM-300x58.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 12.33.59 PM\" width=\"437\" height=\"94\" \/><\/a>While some may argue the HONY founder isn\u2019t your typical journalist, he still claims to adhere to journalism\u2019s ethical code, stating in the editorial that he refrains from being too \u201cpolitical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this case, as unusual as it may seem, I commend him for taking a moment from his work to be \u201cpolitical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s presidential race seems to have turned uncharacteristically hostile, and it\u2019s alarming to think that the future of our country has become a form of twisted entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>But the so-called entertainment reaches a point where it isn\u2019t funny anymore. The future of the United States shouldn\u2019t be taken lightly.<\/p>\n<p>In my honest opinion, Stanton deserves the utmost praise for his editorial.
