{"id":5836,"date":"2016-03-31T00:50:11","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T04:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=5836"},"modified":"2016-03-31T03:21:26","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T07:21:26","slug":"img-hires-brawn-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/img-hires-brawn-model\/","title":{"rendered":"IMG hires male &#8216;brawn&#8217; model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By SIDNEY STERLING<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, Ashley Graham, a 28-year-old plus-size model, rocked the cover of <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em>\u2019s 2016 swimsuit edition and forced the fashion world change the perspective regarding the typical model prototype.<\/p>\n<p>Flash forward to this week. Male plus-size models are also revamping the fashion field.<\/p>\n<p>Zach Miko, 26, a male plus-sized model from Stratford, Conn. with a 40-inch waist, signed to IMG\u2019s \u201cbrawn\u201d line this past week. IMG is one of the most prestigious modeling agencies in the world and manages models like Lara Stone, Freja Beha and Gigi Hadid.<\/p>\n<p>In his attempt to stray away from words such as \u201clarge\u201d or \u201cplus,\u201d Miko likes to be referred to as a \u201cbrawn\u201d model. He has also urged IMG to call their plus-size female category \u201ccurve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <em>The Guardian<\/em>, Miko stated, \u201cI don\u2019t find \u201cplus size\u201d offensive, but I think it\u2019s the same [as fat] in that plus size has grown to have a negative connotation. Plus, means additional, outside; it keeps pushing that label of not being \u201cnormal\u201d. If you see the word \u201cbrawn\u201d, you think about physical strength and power, just as \u201ccurve\u201d suggests sexy and confident, as opposed to \u201cbig.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When taking a look at Zach Miko\u2019s modeling resume, one might notice that he has only modeled for Target. However, Target is a big retailer in the United States and Miko immediately got attention from bloggers and various sites when his work hit the stands.<\/p>\n<p>In an article about Miko, Teen Vogue stated, \u201cAs the fashion industry continues to try and diversify the body types, genders, and skin tones of the models it hires, more and more people are finding themselves represented on the runway and in magazines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fashion outlets are calling this shift in the modeling world \u201cgenius\u201d and \u201ccaptivating\u201d because it embodies the average person.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Toronto Star<\/em> also stated, \u201cHe\u2019s blond, blue-eyed and his size-13 shoes are leaving big footprints on the fashion industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People just cannot get enough of Miko and his brave actions are inspiring others to break the barriers our society self imposes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5837 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Screen-Shot-2016-03-31-at-12.20.51-AM-300x35.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-03-31 at 12.20.51 AM\" width=\"403\" height=\"57\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, people will always have negative things to say.
