<\/a>When I first read this headline, one word leaped off the screen: \u201cgirl.\u201d \u201cGirl shooter?\u201d I thought to myself. Since when do we identify shooters by their gender in headlines?<\/p>\nOther headlines rarely have the shooter\u2019s gender.<\/p>\n
For example, this Jul. 9, 2016 CNN headline reads, \u201cDallas sniper attack: 5 officers killed, suspect identified.\u201d There is no gender stated.<\/p>\n
A Jul. 25, 2016 CNN headline reads, \u201cFort Myers shooting: 2 dead outside teen party at club.\u201d There is no gender stated.<\/p>\n
Even the word \u201cgunman\u201d is ambiguous without clarification. For example, in a Dec. 5, 2015 CNN broadcast, the reporter referred to the shooter as \u201cthe female gunman,\u201d to clarify her gender.<\/p>\n
In a country where hundreds of shootings happen every year, it is easy for citizens to read the headlines monotonously. But, this shouldn\u2019t be the case. A shooting should get someone\u2019s attention not because the shooter is a female, but because the shooting happened at all.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s headline should have been just as devastating and shocking without the word \u201cgirl\u201d in it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
