{"id":6581,"date":"2016-09-16T13:38:43","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T17:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=6581"},"modified":"2016-09-16T13:38:43","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T17:38:43","slug":"aleppo-gaffe-hinders-johnson-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/aleppo-gaffe-hinders-johnson-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Aleppo gaffe hinders Johnson campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By DANIEL LLOVERAS<\/p>\n<p>In an election year with two major party candidates who have historically high disapproval ratings, Libertarian Gary Johnson sees an opportunity to send a third party to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>As Johnson, who appeals particularly to young voters, has climbed to nearly 10\u00a0percent in national polls, the news media have been hesitant to give much attention to his campaign. Instead, news organizations have focused on issues that Americans are all too familiar with, such as Hillary Clinton&#8217;s e-mails and Donald Trump&#8217;s insults.<\/p>\n<p>However, Johnson received a significant amount of coverage last week after an MSNBC interview during which he expressed his unfamiliarity with Aleppo, a war-torn Syrian city.<a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-16-at-10.31.19-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6592 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-16-at-10.31.19-AM-282x300.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-09-16-at-10-31-19-am\" width=\"321\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-16-at-10.31.19-AM-282x300.png 282w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-16-at-10.31.19-AM-768x816.png 768w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-16-at-10.31.19-AM-964x1024.png 964w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-16-at-10.31.19-AM.png 998w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Johnson was chastised by several news organizations, including <em>The New York Times<\/em>,\u00a0for his lack of foreign policy knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Criticism for the Aleppo gaffe\u00a0was arguably the most attention the Johnson campaign has received from the news media.<\/p>\n<p>The tendency of news organizations to focus coverage on the two major party candidates has made it difficult for the Johnson campaign to garner positive attention.<\/p>\n<p>For Johnson,\u00a0participation in the presidential debates would provide the perfect opportunity to receive good publicity and attract voters.<\/p>\n<p>The Aleppo gaffe was a major setback for Johnson, who must average at least 15 percent in national polls to participate in the debates.
