{"id":6822,"date":"2016-10-07T06:13:15","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T10:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=6822"},"modified":"2016-10-07T06:14:12","modified_gmt":"2016-10-07T10:14:12","slug":"hurricane-matthew-dominates-news-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/hurricane-matthew-dominates-news-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Matthew dominates news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By MADISON BROWN<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Matthew has been getting widespread attention this week in the news media, especially here in South Florida.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.55.32-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6823 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.55.32-PM-274x300.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-10-06-at-9-55-32-pm\" width=\"400\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.55.32-PM-274x300.png 274w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.55.32-PM-768x839.png 768w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.55.32-PM-937x1024.png 937w, https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.55.32-PM.png 1204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>The category 4 hurricane was expected to hit Florida and travel up the coastal United States on Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Miami cancelled classes and closed all of its campuses from 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday in preparation for whatever Matthew would bring to the Miami-Dade area.<\/p>\n<p>News coverage has been constant, in addition to people posting Facebook updates and tweeting about the storm to make sure people are aware and prepared for the potential impact.<\/p>\n<p>Posts range from tracking the storm\u2019s path to telling people to stock up on certain supplies in case of power outages.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the coverage is extremely serious since <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/hurricane-matthew-upgraded-category-millions-warned-storm-kill\/story?id=42608853\">the storm killed more than 100 people in Haiti and forced nearly three million people in the United States to evacuate their areas.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.52.56-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6824 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Screen-Shot-2016-10-06-at-9.52.56-PM-258x300.png\" alt=\"screen-shot-2016-10-06-at-9-52-56-pm\" width=\"326\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a>However, some people looked for the humor in the grave situation, posting memes and other comical photos related to Hurricane Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News anchor Shepard Smith stressed the storm\u2019s life-threatening potential bluntly during a broadcast on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis moves 20 miles to the west, you and everyone you know are dead.
