{"id":7215,"date":"2016-11-18T06:50:22","date_gmt":"2016-11-18T11:50:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=7215"},"modified":"2016-11-18T06:50:22","modified_gmt":"2016-11-18T11:50:22","slug":"media-monarch-lives-on-after-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/media-monarch-lives-on-after-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Media monarch lives on after death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By MADISON BROWN<\/p>\n<p>One of this week&#8217;s top news stories focuses on someone who used to lead\u00a0the news by reporting it.<\/p>\n<p>Gwen Ifill, former co-host of PBS NewsHour, died on Monday at age 61.<\/p>\n<p>Ifill dominated the world of news media and politics, having covered the White House, Congress and many national campaigns over the course of her career. <em>The Washington Post, The New York Times<\/em>, NBC and PBS all hold spaces on her impressive resume.<\/p>\n<p>Another impressive accomplishment, Ifill broke glass ceilings before it was cool. She began her journalism career in the 1970s, a time when white men ruled the newsrooms, as an African American woman. And she didn&#8217;t stop there.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, she became half\u00a0of the first network nightly news female co-anchor team with Judy Woodruff on PBS.<\/p>\n<p>According to her family, Ifill&#8217;s death was related to uterine cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Ifill as\u00a0a news media monarch\u00a0is still ruling the news today. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/14\/business\/media\/gwen-ifill-dies.html\">The New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/tv\/gwen-ifill-journalist-who-became-staple-of-public-affairs-tv-shows-dies-at-61\/2016\/11\/14\/2ae4c106-aa91-11e6-977a-1030f822fc35_story.html\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/us\/2016\/11\/15\/don-lemon-gwen-ifill-emotional-death-vo-ctn.cnn\">CNN<\/a> and more paid tribute to Ifill with headlines and stories this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I got my first job by exceeding expectations,&#8221; Ifill said in an interview with the Archive of American Television in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Ifill changed journalism with her acclaimed work and dedication, and helped pave the way for females and minorities now and for years to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By MADISON BROWN One of this week&#8217;s top news stories focuses on someone who used to lead\u00a0the news by reporting it.
