{"id":9061,"date":"2017-09-29T13:36:41","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T17:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=9061"},"modified":"2017-09-29T13:37:09","modified_gmt":"2017-09-29T17:37:09","slug":"hurricane-irma-slows-state-transportation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/hurricane-irma-slows-state-transportation\/","title":{"rendered":"Irma slows Florida&#8217;s transportation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By VIVIANA ONORATO<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurricane Irma caused around 6.3 million people to evacuate from Florida&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coastal and low-lying areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLifting the tolls cut millions of residents a break before, during and after what became the largest evacuation in Florida\u2019s history,\u201d said Florida Gov. Rick Scott. He lifted the tolls on the Florida Turnpike and other state highways with tolls on Sept. 5 to ease the traffic in order to cause a better flow on the roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result of this hurricane was chaotic, making the highways of Florida unbearable with hours of traffic. As reported by CNN, \u201cTransportation officials said Friday that there were long areas of congestion on segments of I-75 northbound and I-95 northbound.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no surprise that basic necessities like finding gas, water or hotels created more long hours to travel north. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We stopped at three places for gasoline. Two places were out,&#8221; said Florida resident Carol Lang. The congestion lasted up all the way to I-10 interchange in North Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These stop and gos made Floridians double the time that they had expected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe GPS tracker did not change the hours left, which resulted us being on the road for a whole 24 hours,\u201d said Chiara Bruzzi. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were rest areas throughout the highways that provided food and bathrooms.
