{"id":9078,"date":"2017-10-05T15:07:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T19:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/?p=9078"},"modified":"2017-10-05T15:07:08","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T19:07:08","slug":"tropical-storm-nate-may-hit-u-s-gulf-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.com.miami.edu\/reporting\/tropical-storm-nate-may-hit-u-s-gulf-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Nate may hit U.S. Gulf Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By EVAN ALDO<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The United States may still not be off the hook for hurricanes this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A tropical cyclone in the northwestern Caribbean Sea has recently been upgraded to a named tropical storm called Nate. \u00a0Meteorologists believe the system is likely to become a hurricane in the next three days. \u00a0They also predict that it may hit the northern Gulf Coast on Sunday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNate is expected to strengthen as it moves over warmer waters on its way to the U.S. coast,\u201d says the National Hurricane Center. \u00a0\u201cBut at this point, it is too early to specify the timing, location, or magnitude of these impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nate is currently bringing heavy rainfall to Nicaragua as it is heading towards Cancun. It has triggered flood warnings in these areas, as well as a hurricane watch in Mexico\u2019s Yucatan peninsula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Right now the tropical storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. \u00a0It is expected to take a northwestward path later today and start to move at a faster speed, according to the National Hurricane Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The sustained winds are expected to reach 75 mph by Sunday. \u00a0Although this is much less than recent hurricanes such as Irma or Maria, forecasters are still warning people to watch out for flash floods and mudslides. \u00a0Rick Scott, the governor of Florida, has already addressed the state to discuss preparation for the storm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the devastations from hurricanes Irma and Maria, another hurricane clearly is something the United States can do without at this time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Congress has been debating passing a 15 billion dollar hurricane recovery bill.\u00a0 However, if Nate ends up being as catastrophic as Sandy was in 2012, American taxpayers may have a lot more to worry about. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By EVAN ALDO The United States may still not be off the hook for hurricanes this season.
